Don't Hold Your Breath

Some process shots of a poster I designed for the Melvins Lite show at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In a CEMETERY! I got to do a poster for a show in October…with Frankenstein on it…in a CEMETERY! My brain almost melted when Justin at the Secret Serpents asked me to be a part of the tour.

This is also the Melvins’ attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the fastest tour of the United States. I’m stoked to have been a teeny tiny part of it. They made a tour diary - you should go and read it. Aside from being an amazing band they are also literate and well-read. Check it out. Be enlightened.

Process:
I start every drawing in my sketchbook. I don’t know why but it works so I don’t try to change the process. Probably because the sketchbook is more durable than a single sheet of paper.

I wanted the Melvins poster to compliment the Swans poster. So I had to find a photo of the Monster that was similar in pose. I got lucky (sorta) and found a still from the first movie - Frankenstein. In Bride of Frankenstein he has burns on his face and more scars/stitches…yeah.

Also I used to work with Buzz’s wife and one day she invited me over to see their house. This was like in 2002. Buzz showed me all the crazy stuff he would collect while touring. In one room he had all these Frankenstein figures lined up like an army. It was the figure you could get from Burger King back in the 90’s. So that was the inspiration for drawing the Monster. It wasn’t until the Swans poster that I had a direction. Which was also curated by Secret Serpents.

Holy crap I thought bones were difficult to draw…but the muscles are just as much a challenge!! Especially since most anatomy books don’t show you the different angles of the muscles when flexing or extending. I feel like I spent just as much time researching (and making sure I got things accurate) as I did with actually drawing. Drawing the muscles and tendons of the hand was the most difficult part. I can see why it’s glossed over in a lot of anatomy books. Shit be not easy….son! You hafta draw the bones and then the muscles on top. Draw, erase, draw then ink.

I am nerd hear me bore.

I’ll post more process pics and tell you how much I LOVE the Melvins… soon.

Thanks to everyone that bought the Swans gig poster and the art prints. I hope you dug them. The Bubblegum and Pumpkin art prints sold out fast. They are shipping today and tomorrow. Please expect them to arrive next week. And THANK YOU for being patient with your orders. Still sorting everything out with FedEx.
